Bad Breath Causes and Cures

Many people don’t realize that they have bad breath until they’ve been told. Some people go through life not knowing because their loved ones don’t want to hurt their feelings by telling them the truth. However, let me tell you, it is always better to tell your friends or family if they are suffering from bad breath. Why? Because bad breath tends to scare people away, including potential employers and clients. Also, bad breath can be a symptom of an underlying health issue. In this post, I’ll go through some leading causes of bad breath and, hopefully, suggest some cures that will work for you.

coffee

COFFEE
I can’t stress enough that coffee is not a meal substitute. Coffee is one of the leading causes of bad breath in our society because most people, like me, are addicted to the sweet aromatic caffeine rush that helps them get through the day. However, what most people forget is that coffee causes stale breath and tooth stains. I know many people drink coffee in the morning and nothing else all day. Their breath is kicking within an hour or two, whenever they forget to brush. It is important to remember to brush your teeth 30 minutes after you drink coffee. It will help with your case of bad breath, which will only get worse if you don’t freshen your mouth. If you don’t have time to brush, mask it with a mint or rinse.

FOOD
Bile can cause a foul odor in your mouth after meals. During digestion your body will release acid to breakdown food particles in your small intestine, which can rise into your mouth especially if you don’t digest correctly evident through burping. Another way food can cause bad breath is through being trapped in between your teeth and can potentially lead to teeth stain, plaque, and cavity. To fix bad breath by food, brush your teeth after meals and don’t forget your tongue either.

TOOTH DECAY
Rotting teeth can cause serious bad breath as well as health problems. This is because tooth decay develops toxins that can seep into the body’s system and cause inflammations that can possibly lead to other health issues. Food particles can get stuck in a rotting tooth and, as stated above, can cause bad breath. If any of your teeth hurt, go see a dentist. A dentist will ultimately determine if you have a rotting tooth and will suggest the best method of treating it. Fixing a decaying tooth will cure your bad breath, if that is the cause of your bad breath.

DRY MOUTH
Dry mouth contributes to bad breath because the production of saliva decreased. Saliva helps clean your mouth by washing away food particles and bacteria that cause bad odors. Luckily for us, dry mouth usually occurs during sleep,

smoking

which will lead to morning breath. However, if you find yourself waking up to morning breath make sure you’re sleeping correctly with your mouth closed.

SMOKING & DRINKING
To state the obvious, smoking and drinking will cause bad breath. This is because the alcohol is similar to the bile realized in our body and the nicotine will dry out your mouth. I know it’s hard to kick a habit, but if you want to cure your bad breath, eliminate smoking and drinking in your lifestyle.

Teeth Whitening Products Review

Everyone wants pearly whites. I, like many of you, have been on a quest to find the best product to whiten my teeth. I will share my knowledge, offer tips to prevent tooth sensitivity that comes with teeth whitening, and advice on whitening maintenance.

Crest and Rembrandt are 2 of the top whitening brands. Most of the products from their whitening line have whiten Crest 3D White Whitestrips Vividmy teeth without fail. The following is a list of the products I’ve tried and my thoughts on each:

These strips got my teeth white in as little as 4-5 days. By the end of the pack (10 days) my teeth was extremely white and I was ecstatic with the results. The only downside is that it causes extreme teeth sensitivity.

This product is similar to the Advanced Vivid but the strips did not move while I was talking, hence the “no slip technology.” The downside to this product is that it did not whiten as well as the Advanced Vivid Whitestrips and that it takes about 2 weeks to get the desired whitening results. Another problem is that despite the product claiming to be “enamel-safe”, my teeth were sensitive by the end of the product.

Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste

  • Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste

This toothpaste was a waste of money. I thought it would help whiten my teeth, but after two tubes I did not notice any whitening. This product is like any other toothpaste; it’ll leave your mouth minty fresh and clean.

The Stain Shield strips are meant as maintenance. It will not whiten your teeth like Advanced Vivid. I felt that these strips were a waste of money. They didn’t even maintain my whitened teeth nor did they prevent future stains.

Rembrandt’s Whitening Strips does as it promises, but it takes about 6-7 days before you see any results. I like these strips more than the Crest because it does not cause teeth sensitivity and it does not move.
Rembrandt whitening

  • Rembrandt Deeply White + Peroxide Whitening Mouthwash

This product is the best I’ve used. Not only does it whiten my teeth but it doesn’t damage my tooth enamel, thanks to the sodium fluoride. I used this twice a day, until the bottle ran out, and noticed a substantial difference in the color of my teeth. However, it does take a whole bottle to work as it uses a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide.

This product is meant as maintenance and, unfortunately, it fails in that department. This pen did not whiten my teeth at all and the gel tasted horrible, not that I was purposely trying to eat it. The gel was so thick; no matter how little of the product I put on, it took about 20 minutes to dry. By the time I was through with the pen, I did not notice any significantly visible whitening.

Teeth Sensitivity
Let’s face it. No matter what the product tells you, you’ll always experience some enamel decay and teeth sensitivity after using any whitening product. Plus, overusing whitening strips will decay your gums. What you can do to protect your teeth is use fluoride based products and make sure that the strips do not touch your gums. My dentist recommended GC MI Paste Plus that is a tropical cream with calcium phosphate and fluoride.

Whiten Teeth Maintenance
After you’ve whitened your teeth, I suggest you lay off dark colored drinks or use straws.
Instead of buying strips at the first sign of a stain, try using baking soda on your teeth to remove it.
Make sure to drink water and brush your teeth after each meal to prevent future stains.
