Foundations Designed For Oily Skin

After you’ve balanced out your skin using my advice on the “Oil Control Products That Work” post, it’s time to apply foundation. Foundation evens out your skin tone and set your makeup, so it is prudent to find the correct foundation for your skin type. For oily skin, the best foundations are powder foundations, but for women who want additional coverage, I’ll recommend some liquid foundations too.

Powder Foundations

Powder foundations are best for oily skin because they stay in place more than liquid and cream foundations, and are very effective in absorbing oil.

  • Shiseido Sheer Matifying Compact is a super oil-absorbing powder that last all day. It also makes your skin feel silky smooth with each application.
  • Bare Essentials bare Minerals Foundation only needs light application since the term “a little goes a long way” directly applies with this product. If you apply too much, it will set into your fine lines. However, it stays on all day.
  • Laura Mercier Powder Foundation is very matifying on oily skin and controls shine extremely well. The powder lasts throughout the day.
  • MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation not only matifies oily skin, but also minimizes the appearance of large pores.

Liquid Foundations

If you choose to use a liquid foundation with or without the powder foundation, make sure you use a liquid foundation that is oil-free. Oil-free liquid foundations are designed for oily skin and will control oil production, or at least mask it. Most liquid foundations for oily skin will have a light to medium coverage. However, the coverage is easily buildable to obtain the desired (heavy) coverage.

  • Make Up Forever Mat Velvet + is a great matifying liquid foundation for oily skin. It offers a light coverage that you can build up. It is water resistant and keeps your face matte throughout the day. However, the downside to this foundation is that it tends to settle into your fine lines.
  • L’Oreal Visible Lift (the one with the blue tags on the front, because the Infallible line is for dry skin types). This foundation also has anti-aging benefits because it contains ingredients like retinol and vitamin C.
  • Laura Mercier Oil-Free Liquid Foundation which is one of the best liquid foundations for oily skin. Great matifying coverage all day long.

One of the worst liquid foundations I’ve used is Neutrogena’s Skin Clearing makeup, which does help clear up the face but also dries it out, and L’Oreal True Match, which is for dry skin.

Two of the most important tips to remember when choosing a foundation, whether powder or liquid, for your skin is:

1)      Pick a product that will balance out your skin, which are natural products that are not full of chemicals.
2)      Pick a product that is designed for your skin type. If not your skin will have an adverse reaction to the product and you’ll look the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve.

Finally, at the end of the day thoroughly wash off your make and clean your face.

I hope I’ve helped you chose a foundation that works for your oily skin. Let me know if you recommend any other products that have worked for your oily skin.

Oily Skin Products That Work

Oily skin types are more prone to acne than dry skin types. Women with oily skin tend to produce too much oil. The excess oil can lead to acne flare-up, acne cysts, and blemishes. Excess oil production can last throughout the day making your face look like a grease ball within a few hours, unless preventative measures are taken. I’ll share with you my favorite products that will help oily skin types keep a clear face.

Before we start, I want you to make sure that your skin type is definitely oily. Otherwise, you could ruin your skin and breakout further by listening to my advice. And I definitely do not want to be the reason why you’re having low self-esteem from breakouts.

Determining Your Skin Type
Wash your face with lukewarm tap water. Pat your face dry and leave it alone for 45 minutes. Remember; do not add any products to your face after washing it. After 45 minutes, if your face feels dry and crackly then your skin type is dry. If your face has oil spots only on your T-zone and dry everywhere else, then you have combination skin. If your face is oily all over, then you have oily skin.

Once you’ve determined that you are an oily skin type, you should read below for ways to help keep your oil at bay.

Combative Regime against Oil
If you are aiming to apply foundation, you need to prep your skin beforehand. This process will allow your face to stay oil-free most of the day.

  1. Wash your face with a cleanser that contains acids like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxyl acid. The acid will fight off oil production. Some of my favorite oil treating cleanser include:
    • Origins Checks and Balances Face Wash. The kelp leaf extract educes excess oil production, and its wheat protein moisturizes your face.
    • The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash. The tea tree oils clear pore-clogging impurities and reduce excess oil production.
  2. Toner is very important for oily skin types. The toner minimizes your pores and reduces oil production
throughout the day. When looking for a toner, make sure it contains acids like the cleanser. Some of my favorite toners include:

    • The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner: The lemon tea tree and green tea tree oils clears my clogged pores and leaves my skin feeling matte.
    • Origins Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner: The cooling mint extract leaves my face feeling refreshed while the salicylic acid minimizes my pores for instance shine reduction.
    • The Body Shop Seaweed Clarifying Toner: The seaweed extract is perfect for the winter since it balances your oil, keeping your skin from drying out or producing too much oil, and at the same time clears your skin.
  3. Primer is a great tool for oily skin because it controls shine throughout the day. It also creates a smoother canvas for when you apply your foundation and helps set your foundation all day. You can refer back to my “How To Minimize Your Pores” post for the best primers to use. But, to keep it short and sweet, my favorite primers:
    • Too Faced Primed & Poreless
    • L’Oreal Studio Secrets Face Primer
  4. Choose a foundation that is non-comedogenic, oil-free, and fragrance-free. Foundations that say “oil-free” are designed to control oil production and keep your face looking matte or dewy.  I’ll recommend foundations that work wonders on oily skin in my “Foundations Designed For Oily Skin” post.
  5. Blotting papers are your best friends! Use them as needed throughout the day to maintain your matte look.

I hope this helps. Please comment if you have any more suggestions and ideas to reduce excess oil, below.

How To Fix Dry Skin Instantly

Fall is here and winter is coming. It’s that time of year where most of us get dry skin. Dry skin is due to low humidity at low temperature. To keep your skin soft and supple, you need to moisturize your skin and keep it in. Here are some tips that will help you keep your skin moisturized throughout this cold weather. I’ll mainly focus on products and DIY recipes that will help increase and lock in your skin’s moisture for the winter.

Minimize Hot Showers
I know it’s so tempting to take a long hot shower, especially during cold weathers, but hot water robs the skin of moisture causing dry skin. You should keep your hot showers short, approximately 15 minutes, and try to limit it to one shower per day.

Moisturize After Showering
Most people tend to forget to moisturize after they shower. However, in the fall and winter, this step is a MUST! I recommend using an oil moisturizer. Personally, I love True Blue Spa Moisturizing Oil Spray. For a cheaper alternative, Johnson’s Baby Oil works great too. The reason why I recommend oil is because it will lock in moisture 10 times more than regular body lotion and more readily absorbed into your pores than regular body lotion. True Blue Spa Putting’ On The Spritz Moisturizing Oil contains orange peel and aloe extracts that will soothe and moisturize your skin and the vitamin C & E will help prevent free radical damage. Johnson’s Baby Oil’s main ingredients are aloe vera and vitamin E, which will help moisturize your skin and prevent future skin damage. The additional bonus of using oil over lotion for this fall and winter seasons is that your skin will look super silky and toned—light will reflect off your oiled skin enhancing your features.

However, if you do not have any body oil, my next recommendation would be body cream. Creams for the body tend to be a better moisturizer and are better tolerated by the skin. Most are non-greasy which works well with most skin types and helps the skin maintain moisture. Body creams are particularly useful during the cold because it is easily absorbed by the skin. Body lotion, on the other hand, is generally used for mild cases of dry skin and when moisture is more available like in the summer and spring. I recommend using True Blue Spa Lay It On Thick Intense Moisture Body Cream With Shea Butter. I love this product because the cream makes my skin feel instantly moisturized and it keeps my skin moisturized for a few hours. A cheaper alternative would be any Bath and Body Works Signature Body Cream. My favorite is their Moonlight Path Body Cream, which instantly softens my skin for longer periods of time because the product contains Avocado and Almond oils.

Moisturize Your Hands Throughout The Day
My hands get extremely dry throughout the day. This is because the hands are the most exposed body part and the most susceptible to weather. I recommend The Body Shop Hand Cream in Wild Rose. This hand cream not only even outs your skin tone but it hydrates your hands too. Another hand cream I love using during the cold is L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream that only needs a small application to work wonders on your skin and it’s not greasy.

Stay Hydrated
The weather will externally dry your skin and dehydration will internally dry your skin. Dehydration will make your skin look dull and dry, so drink at least 9 glasses of water per day.

Aloe Vera Mask
Keeping your face hydrated is very important during the summer because your face is the first thing people see. Not to mention, it’s very hard to evenly apply foundation with dry cracked in. Aloe vera is one of the key ingredients in most body oils and creams. The main reason is because aloe vera is extremely moisturizing! Just rub some of the aloe vera gels on your face and neck and wait for it to dry before washing it off with lukewarm water. For super dry skin, add an egg yolk and olive oil to the aloe vera gel, which will instantly rejuvenate dry wrinkled skin.
