Cellulite Fixes that Actually Work

Cellulite before and afterWhen you’ve been sick like I’ve been for the past few weeks, it’s hard to find the time or energy to go the gym. Instead, I spent my time noticing my cellulite and wondering why men seemed to have escaped the curse of cellulite that most women bear. To clarify, cellulite is the result of fat cells swelling and distorting connective tissue, causing pockets of fat to push against the skin’s surface to create that distinctive lumpy look.

However, there’s a biological reason for why men rarely get cellulite as much as women. The human bone is normally surrounded by muscle which is covered in a layer of fat that will be turned into energy. Cellulite, a collection of fats that includes lipids, fatty acids, and oils, is crammed in this fat layer directly underneath the skin, giving it a dimply, lumpy appearance. Most men don’t have cellulite because they tend to have more muscle and less body fat than women. Not only that, the skin of women is often thinner than the skin of men, making it easier to notice the fat layer underneath.

Fortunately, one of the best methods to prevent and decrease cellulite is through exercise and reducing consumptionReverse Lunge of fatty foods. Regular cardio can shrink the fat-cell deposits that make up cellulite. Exercise will not only tone your butt and thighs but can also reduce the amount and appearance of fat so the skin looks smoother. Taking the stairs and doing lunges are especially great cellulite busters. I recommend doing three sets of 12 to 15 reps, while alternating legs.

Thick creams like Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream will trap water and plump up the skin so dimples don’t appear as deep. Look for creams that specifically target cellulite. These creams contain caffeine, a natural anti-cellulite ingredient, which will tighten the skin by constricting blood vessels. Another ingredient to look for is Retin-A, only available by prescription, which thickens the uppermost skin cell layer. Retinol, the over-the-counter alternative, functions similarly.

One of the worst anti-cellulite products I’ve ever tried is Nivea Body Good-bye Cellulite. This gel-like cream promises to visibly reduce the appearance of cellulite and smooth out the skin’s uneven lumps within 2 weeks. Yet despite using an entire bottle for one year, this product has failed to visibly reduce my cellulite. In fact, regular exercise has proven more effective. It’s important to note that topical products will not fix cellulite permanently; they can only make the skin look less rippled for a few hours.

For a quick cover-up, try tanning yourself as cellulite tends to be less noticeable on darker skin. The dark color reduces the contrast so bumps are less obvious.

High fiber foodsThe best natural method for reducing cellulite is maintaining a healthy diet filled with plenty of high fiber fruits and vegetables, as well as drinking hot tea that will help breakdown accumulated lipids. Green tea, in particular, will help burn fat cells and increase metabolism naturally thanks to the catechin polyphenol in green tea. Furthermore, green tea lowers cholesterol and enhances fat oxidation. Lastly, green tea inhibits the movement of glucose in fat cells attributed with obesity. Together, a healthy diet and green tea can improve the overall appearance of cellulite if used daily.

In summary, the best methods for treating cellulite are exercise, proper diet, and thick creams.

Oily Skin Products That Work

Oily skin types are more prone to acne than dry skin types. Women with oily skin tend to produce too much oil. The excess oil can lead to acne flare-up, acne cysts, and blemishes. Excess oil production can last throughout the day making your face look like a grease ball within a few hours, unless preventative measures are taken. I’ll share with you my favorite products that will help oily skin types keep a clear face.

Before we start, I want you to make sure that your skin type is definitely oily. Otherwise, you could ruin your skin and breakout further by listening to my advice. And I definitely do not want to be the reason why you’re having low self-esteem from breakouts.

Determining Your Skin Type
Wash your face with lukewarm tap water. Pat your face dry and leave it alone for 45 minutes. Remember; do not add any products to your face after washing it. After 45 minutes, if your face feels dry and crackly then your skin type is dry. If your face has oil spots only on your T-zone and dry everywhere else, then you have combination skin. If your face is oily all over, then you have oily skin.

Once you’ve determined that you are an oily skin type, you should read below for ways to help keep your oil at bay.

Combative Regime against Oil
If you are aiming to apply foundation, you need to prep your skin beforehand. This process will allow your face to stay oil-free most of the day.

  1. Wash your face with a cleanser that contains acids like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxyl acid. The acid will fight off oil production. Some of my favorite oil treating cleanser include:
    • Origins Checks and Balances Face Wash. The kelp leaf extract educes excess oil production, and its wheat protein moisturizes your face.
    • The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash. The tea tree oils clear pore-clogging impurities and reduce excess oil production.
  2. Toner is very important for oily skin types. The toner minimizes your pores and reduces oil production
throughout the day. When looking for a toner, make sure it contains acids like the cleanser. Some of my favorite toners include:

    • The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner: The lemon tea tree and green tea tree oils clears my clogged pores and leaves my skin feeling matte.
    • Origins Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner: The cooling mint extract leaves my face feeling refreshed while the salicylic acid minimizes my pores for instance shine reduction.
    • The Body Shop Seaweed Clarifying Toner: The seaweed extract is perfect for the winter since it balances your oil, keeping your skin from drying out or producing too much oil, and at the same time clears your skin.
  3. Primer is a great tool for oily skin because it controls shine throughout the day. It also creates a smoother canvas for when you apply your foundation and helps set your foundation all day. You can refer back to my “How To Minimize Your Pores” post for the best primers to use. But, to keep it short and sweet, my favorite primers:
    • Too Faced Primed & Poreless
    • L’Oreal Studio Secrets Face Primer
  4. Choose a foundation that is non-comedogenic, oil-free, and fragrance-free. Foundations that say “oil-free” are designed to control oil production and keep your face looking matte or dewy.  I’ll recommend foundations that work wonders on oily skin in my “Foundations Designed For Oily Skin” post.
  5. Blotting papers are your best friends! Use them as needed throughout the day to maintain your matte look.

I hope this helps. Please comment if you have any more suggestions and ideas to reduce excess oil, below.
